Creeping Blue Phlox

Creeping Blue Phlox, or Forest Phlox – Phlox divaricata / Polemoniaceae

These beautiful violet blue flowers bloom April through June in rich forests and fields from Canada down to Florida in the eastern USA and as far west as Texas. The somewhat clustered blossoms open from a furled horn into 5, occasionally 6, petals with a trumpet shaped center inclosing the stamen. Leaves are 2.5 to 5 cm opposite, ovate to lanceolate on a sticky, leafy stem that is 6 to 20 inches tall.

I took this photograph in the early evening along the banks of the Sautee Creek off Lynch Mountain RD, in White County Georgia USA.
